What to Expect from Your Functional Therapy Session

Before your session

You will be invited to book a time for me to come out to you and your horse. After we select a time, I will ask you to answer some questions via a form to help me further understand what is surfacing for you and your horse and your history together. This will allow me to show up to the session ready to dive in. Sessions typically last between 45 minutes to 1 hour; however, I always allow the horse to dictate the length of our session.

During your session

I will ask additional questions as I make physical observations to further support my understanding of what may be going on with your horse. Then, we will work together using a holistic approach to determine what the root cause (or causes) of dysfunction may be.

From there I will create a treatment plan, intuitively selecting different healing modalities based on the issues I uncover from what your horse's body tells me. I may use stress point therapy, Swedish massage, Shiatsu, and/or Gua Sha techniques.

As I flow through the session with your horse, I will describe what I am doing at each point, inviting you to feel what I feel or see what I see, to ensure that you understand what is going on in your horse's body, why they might be behaving a certain way, and how to notice physical and behavioral changes throughout.

After your session

We will discuss the next steps moving forward and I will give you some "homework" including stretches, postural work, and/or massage techniques to support your horse's optimal session integration and post-session recovery. My intention is to leave each session with you feeling empowered with the ability to identify where your horse's problems were surfacing, having a base level understanding of the treatment process, witnessing alleviation of the problem and healing in your horse, and expanding your personal knowledge bank and skill set.

Testimonials

"Carolyn is wonderful. She is  professional, talented, and has a passion for equine bodywork. I had her out to see my senior gelding today, and afterwards he was noticeably looser in his body."
-Elizabeth S.
"Carolyn takes amazing care of the lesson horses and personal horses [in our barn's] program. The horses adore her and always feel so much more fluid and comfortable after seeing her. She always leaves us with small exercises we can do to help the horses on our own time, and we have seen good improvement."
-Sophia B.
"Carolyn came out to meet my Quarter Horse and he has been so much happier on trail rides ever since! Thank you for the great work."

About Carolyn

Hey there! Welcome to my website. I'm Carolyn Fugit and I have been an avid horse lover for as long as I can remember. I began my equine journey at age 7 and never looked back. I competed at the national level aboard American Saddlebreds in the ASB Western pleasure division, drove Hackney ponies in the show pleasure ring, and dabbled in both carriage driving and Western dressage. In 2016 I decided to hang up my chaps and take a step back from the competitive side of the horse world. Soon after, I found my sweet mare, Juno, a 12-year-old Rocky Mountain Horse. After several amazing years together, Juno was diagnosed with DSLD, a chronic condition that affects the body's ability to repair soft tissues. Determined to find a way to ease Juno's discomfort, I began my passionate journey into the world of equine bodywork. I was amazed at how much happier and more comfortable Juno felt after I would work on her. This inspired me to continue my education and complete formal certifications in both Equine Sports Massage through EquissageNC and Equine Myo-Manipulative Functional Therapy with honors through Holistic Animal Studies, as well as becoming a member of the International Association of Animal Massage and Bodywork (IAAMB). Though Juno has since passed, I honor her legacy by continuing to extend a helping hand to any equine who may cross my path, whether they are a beloved pasture pet or a competitive athlete.
